PhD Studentship: School of the Arts, English and Drama (Loughborough University, UK)

The School of the Arts, English and Drama at Loughborough University is pleased to announce four fully funded PhD studentships. The studentships will be paid for a period of up to three years, starting in October 2016, and will cover tuition fees at the UK/EU rate, and provide a tax-free stipend of 14,2961.

The School offers an exciting interdisciplinary research environment and we welcome the submission of high-quality proposals that have the potential to make a substantive contribution to research within the School. Of particular interest are proposals that address one of the following research themes:

  • Authorship, Material Text and/or Writers' and Publishers' Archives
  • British and Irish Literary Culture, 1870-1922
  • Early Modern Literature and Culture, including Women's Writing
  • Theatre and Performance (PhD by practice) and Performance Philosophy (practice led proposals are particularly welcome)
  • Gendered Lives: their representation and theorisation
  • Politics between Bodies: art, intersectionality and embodied ethics
  • Public Realm and Public Sphere: the interdisciplinary role of artworks within the built environment
  • Drawing the Domestic: a practice-led phenomenological study through drawing-investigating notions of the experience of 'home'
  • The Photographic Representation of Crisis, Disaster or Trauma (PhD by theory or practice)
  • Service Design for meaningful experience and innovation, or Service Design using networked images for the community
  • Textiles and Digital Technologies: across a range of techniques, with emphasis on process development towards innovation and sustainability
  • Open Access to Research Data: meeting the challenge in the arts and humanities

As part of your application you will be required to submit a detailed research proposal (approximately 2,000 words). Please indicate which theme your proposal aligns with. Further details about preparing a proposal can be found here.

To make an application use the online application form, and quote reference SAED16 in the funding section of the form. Under programme name, please select either Art; Drama; English; or English and Drama (publishing and communication) depending on your proposed area of study.


1. The value of the tax free stipend in years two and three will increase in line with Research Council recommended values.
