Special Issue of Journal of Integrated Design and Process Science: Design Education and Education Design (Jan 2016)

Website: http://www.iospress.nl/journal/journal-of-integrated-design-process-science/
Deadline for submissions: 30 January 2016

Engineering design involves ill-structured problem solving, which makes designing and design education challenging. Scholarly contributions from both engineering design and cognitive science of problem solving had significant impacts on engineering education. The multi-stage problem solving skills, for example, can be enhanced by integrating real-world problems to the design problem context. This problem context often includes fundamental design, customization, personalization, and domain specific engineering issues. Many approaches including project-based learning (PBL), guided discovery, constructionism, and structural synthesis have been studied to increase deep understanding of learners in design education domains. Individual and group design activities are often considered for these efforts. To advance design education, an instructional and experimental learning framework should be purposefully designed. Noticeably, Kolb’s learning model has been used to organize learning outcomes, and to capture learners’ experiences.

The overall theme of this special issue is to broaden our understanding of how design education can be redesigned with instructional design principles. This special issue is intended to present the state-of-the-art on the role of education design to advance design education. Recent research progress on learning technology advancement and pedagogical experiments with novel theory and methodology will be considered. Also, this special issue is intended to include a commentary by inviting authors.

We solicit high quality full submissions in the following categories:

  • original research contributions
  • advanced learning technologies
  • pedagogical experiments and cases
  • surveys, comparisons, and reports on the state-of-the-art

Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Learning by team-based and personalized design activities
  • Novel pedagogical approaches for design education
  • Theory-driven instructional design for design education
  • Deep learning and learner’s engagement in design education
  • Multi-stage problem solving in the design context

Timelines are as follows:

  • Deadline for initial submission: January 30, 2016
  • Time for the first decision: April 15, 2016
  • Deadline for submitting revisions: June 30, 2016
  • Second round review: August 15, 2016
  • Time for the final decision: September 15, 2016
  • Publication date: December 2016

Submission instructions:

Authors are invited to submit original and unpublished papers. All prospective authors are invited to obtain early feedback on possible submissions by e-mailing an abstract to the Guest Editors. All submissions will be peer-reviewed and judged on correctness, originality, technical strength, significance, quality of presentation, and relevance to the special issue topics of interest. Submitted papers to this special issue of JIDPS may not have appeared in or be under consideration for another workshop, conference or a journal, nor may they be under review or submitted to another forum during the review process. Papers of an appropriate standard not included in the special issue may be considered for publication in a regular issue of JIDPS. Manuscripts should be submitted through the journal editorial management system: https://jidps.rndsphere.com, using a paper template that can be downloaded from the same website.
