Deadline for submission: 15 September 2015

Design & Gender is a 2-days colloquium, organised by Design en Recherche, as part of a serie of events funded by Campus Condorcet, inviting design researchers and practitioners to discuss various thematics, such as “the project”, teaching graphic design or research methods.

Design en Recherche, a network of PhD students and young researchers in design, opens this call for papers to amateur-e-s, researchers, activists, professionals, independent scholars, teachers, students and PhD candidates.

In this fourth colloquium, we propose to question the inter-relationships and intersections of Gender Studies and Design. If we consider that design aims to “improve or at least [to] maintain the habitability of the world” (Findeli, 2010, p.292), we need, beforehand, to equip ourselves with tools allowing us to elicit, and make sense of, this world.

Gender Studies and more generally Cultural Studies, as critical tools, uncover certain ‘emplacements’ of the world – the term is understood here as Giorgio Agamben, following Foucault, describes emplacement or apparatus as economy and administration, or as a set of located relationships. They seem to propose tools, methodologies and perspectives to design. Yet, they are hardly taken into account.

Objectives: using gender studies inside design practice(s); elaborating and/or reconfiguring methodologie(s), practice(s), epistemologie(s) from the Gender Studies to question, nurture, or put in tension design as a discipline; exploring ways of queering projects, objetcts and – why not?-users.

Organization: This colloquium will be structured by workshops, talks and thematic panels.

Tiphaine Kazi-Tani, associated researcher in Design, Télécom ParisTech
